About this tool

Word has no Markdown support, so a pasted Markdown table arrives as pipes and dashes. This page turns it into a real table. Copy as rich table puts an HTML table on your clipboard, which Word, Google Docs and Outlook paste as an editable table with a bold header row and borders. Download .docx gives you a Word file with a header row that repeats on every page. Both are made in your browser, so your table is never uploaded.

  • Pastes as a real, editable table, not pipes and dashes
  • Works for Word, Google Docs and Outlook through the clipboard
  • .docx download with a header row that repeats on every page
  • Bold, italic, strikethrough, code and clickable links kept
  • Column alignment from :---: and ---: carried over
  • <br> line breaks stay inside the cell
  • Several tables from one document, each with its heading
  • No upload: the file and the clipboard HTML are made in your browser

Technical details

How the clipboard table and the .docx are made

Copy as rich table writes text/html and text/plain to the clipboard in one operation (the asynchronous Clipboard API, with a copy-event fallback). The HTML is a table with every border, padding and fill written as an inline style, because pasted HTML cannot bring a stylesheet along. The .docx is hand-written WordprocessingML zipped in the browser, with no library.

  • Safe by construction: every cell is escaped, only a small set of tags (bold, italic, code, links, line breaks) is ever written, and only http(s), mailto and relative links are kept.
  • Header row: the clipboard table uses th cells with bold text; the .docx marks the row as a header row so Word repeats it when the table runs over a page.
  • Alignment: the colons in the Markdown delimiter row (:---, :---:, ---:) become left, center and right alignment on each column.
  • Fidelity of paste: Word, Google Docs and Outlook each interpret clipboard HTML in their own way. Borders, bold and column alignment normally survive; fine details such as exact column widths may change.
  • File format: the .docx contains a document part, a styles part and, when needed, hyperlink relationships. It opens in Word, Google Docs (File → Open → Upload), LibreOffice Writer and Apple Pages.

Common problems and fixes

The table pasted as plain text with tabs

Cause: The browser only allowed plain text on the clipboard, or the target field accepts text only (a chat box, a code editor).

Fix: Paste into the Word, Docs or Outlook body instead, or use Download .docx. In Word, Convert Text to Table (Insert → Table) also turns tab-separated text into a table.

No borders after pasting into Word

Cause: Borders are switched off, or Word is hiding table gridlines. Gridlines are a display setting and do not print.

Fix: Make sure Cell borders is on and copy again. In Word, Layout → View Gridlines shows or hides the guides.

The font or sizes changed after pasting

Cause: Word merges pasted HTML with the destination styles, depending on the paste option in effect.

Fix: Click the Paste Options icon that appears next to the table and pick Keep Source Formatting or Match Destination Formatting.

The Markdown was pasted into Word as pipes and dashes

Cause: Word has no Markdown support. Raw Markdown is plain text.

Fix: Paste the Markdown into the box above and use Copy as rich table or Download .docx.

Only part of the table was converted

Cause: A blank line, or a line starting with #, >, - or a code fence, ends a Markdown table.

Fix: Remove the blank line inside the table; the preview shows where the table stops.

Frequently asked questions

How do I paste a Markdown table into Word as a real table?

Paste the Markdown into the box on this page, click Copy as rich table, then click where the table should go in Word and press Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac). Word creates a native table you can resize, restyle and edit.

Does Microsoft Word support Markdown tables?

No. Word has no Markdown parser, so pasted Markdown stays as pipes and dashes. Convert the table first, or paste the text and use Insert → Table → Convert Text to Table with | as the separator, then delete the --- row and the empty first and last columns.

How do I paste a Markdown table into Google Docs?

Click Copy as rich table, then click in the document and press Ctrl+V (⌘V). Docs reads the HTML table and creates a real table. You can also download the .docx and open it with File → Open → Upload in Google Drive.

Can I paste a Markdown table into Outlook?

Yes, in an HTML-format message. Click Copy as rich table, then paste into the message body. A plain-text message cannot hold a table, so Outlook flattens it to text.

How do I convert a Markdown table to a .docx file?

Paste the Markdown and click Download .docx. The file has a native Word table with a bold, shaded header row that repeats on every page. It is created in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Does it keep bold text, links and line breaks?

Yes. Bold, italic, strikethrough and inline code become formatting, links stay clickable, and <br> becomes a line break inside the cell. Turn off Keep bold, italic, code & links for plain text.

Can I convert a Word table to Markdown?

Yes, use the Word Table to Markdown tool: copy the table in Word or Google Docs and paste it there.

Will the .docx open in LibreOffice or Google Docs?

Yes. It is a standard .docx file. LibreOffice Writer opens it directly and Google Docs opens it after File → Open → Upload.

Is my table uploaded anywhere?

No. The Markdown is parsed, the clipboard HTML is created and the .docx is built in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
