Sample shown — paste your own Markdown to replace it.
Paste into Google Sheets
- Click Copy for Google Sheets.
- Open your sheet and click cell A1 (or wherever the table should start).
- Press Ctrl+V (⌘+V). Use Ctrl+Shift+V to paste values without formatting.
Importing instead? Download the CSV, then in Sheets choose File → Import → Upload.
How to put a Markdown table into Google Sheets in 3 steps
Paste your Markdown
Paste one table or a whole README. The first table is used; pick another one from the Table menu if the text holds several. CSV and TSV work too.
Click Copy for Google Sheets
The button puts both an HTML table and tab-separated text on your clipboard, so Sheets can split the cells and keep bold, italics and links.
Paste into your sheet
Click the cell where the table should start (A1 for a new sheet) and press Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac). Press Ctrl+Shift+V instead to paste values without formatting.
Example
| Task | Owner | Status | Effort (h) | | :--- | :--- | :---: | ---: | | Draft launch email | Mia | **Done** | 3 | | Publish [release notes](https://example.com/notes) | Raj | To do | 2 |
Task Owner Status Effort (h) Draft launch email Mia Done 3 Publish release notes Raj To do 2 Pasted at A1: four columns, header row bold, "Done" bold, "release notes" a clickable link.
Options explained
- Table
- Shown when the input holds more than one table. Google Sheets pastes one rectangular range at a time, so the copy and CSV buttons use the table you pick here.First table (default) · any other table
- Keep bold, italic & links
- On: the clipboard carries an HTML table, which Sheets reads for bold header text, italics, strikethrough, links and column alignment. Off: only plain tab-separated values are copied, so the sheet gets no formatting at all.On (default) · Off
- Copy for Google Sheets
- Copies the chosen table as HTML plus tab-separated text. Use it when the sheet is already open in another tab.
- Download CSV
- Saves the chosen table as a UTF-8 .csv file for File → Import → Upload. Commas, quotes and line breaks inside cells are quoted per RFC 4180, and Markdown markup is removed.
- All tables as .xlsx tabs
- Shown when there are several tables. Downloads one workbook with a tab per table, which Sheets opens through File → Import → Upload.

About this tool
Raw Markdown pastes into Google Sheets as one long line per row, with pipes and a row of dashes. This page converts the table first: Copy for Google Sheets puts an HTML table and tab-separated text on your clipboard, so a single Ctrl+V fills the cells and keeps bold, italics and links. If you prefer File → Import, download the table as a CSV file instead. Everything runs in your browser.
- Copy-and-paste into any range, no upload and no sign-up
- HTML plus TSV on the clipboard so Sheets splits the cells
- Bold, italic, strikethrough and links carried over
- CSV download for File → Import with proper quoting
- Several tables as tabs through one .xlsx download
- Escaped pipes (\|) and <br> line breaks handled inside cells
- Markdown markup removed from CSV and plain-text output
- Runs in your browser; the table is not sent anywhere
Technical details
Why the paste works, and what Sheets does with it
Google Sheets reads the clipboard's text/html flavor when it contains a table, and falls back to tab-separated text, which it also splits into columns. This page writes both flavors in one clipboard item. Raw Markdown has neither: it pastes as one line per row in column A.
- Tables are detected with the GitHub Flavored Markdown rules: header row, a delimiter row with the same number of cells, then body rows until a blank line. Escaped pipes (\|) become literal pipes.
- Number parsing is done by Sheets, not by this page. It follows the spreadsheet locale (File → Settings → Locale), so 1,240 and 1.240 can mean different numbers depending on the setting.
- Formatting: the HTML carries inline styles only, because clipboard HTML cannot reference a stylesheet. Sheets ignores what it does not support, such as a font family.
- Formulas: a pasted cell that starts with = may be read as a formula. If a table cell begins with =, +, - or @ and should stay text, format the target range as Plain text before pasting.
- CSV is written with CRLF line endings and a UTF-8 byte order mark, so accented characters survive in Excel too; Sheets ignores the mark.
Common problems and fixes
Everything landed in column A
Cause: Raw Markdown was pasted into Sheets. It has no tabs, so each line becomes one cell.
Fix: Paste the Markdown into the box above and use Copy for Google Sheets. If the text is already in the sheet, select column A and use Data → Split text to columns with the custom separator |, then delete the --- row and the empty first and last columns.
Numbers are left-aligned or show as text
Cause: Sheets reads numbers using the spreadsheet locale. 1,240 is text when the locale expects a decimal comma, and currency symbols that do not match the locale stay text.
Fix: Check File → Settings → Locale, then re-paste. You can also select the column and use Format → Number.
Leading zeros disappeared (007 became 7)
Cause: Sheets turns anything that looks like a number into a number when pasting or importing.
Fix: Select the target range and choose Format → Number → Plain text before pasting. For a CSV import, clear Convert text to numbers, dates, and formulas in the import dialog.
The pasted cells have a different font or background than my sheet
Cause: The HTML flavor includes a font, a bold header and a light grey header background.
Fix: Paste with Ctrl+Shift+V to take the values only, or turn off Keep bold, italic & links and copy again.
Nothing was pasted, or the copy button reports an error
Cause: Some browsers block clipboard writes in embedded frames, private windows or when the page lacks permission.
Fix: Use Download CSV, or select the preview table with the mouse, press Ctrl+C and paste.
Frequently asked questions
How do I copy a Markdown table into Google Sheets?
Paste the Markdown into the box on this page and click Copy for Google Sheets. Then click the first cell in your sheet and press Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac). The cells are split into columns and the header keeps its bold formatting.
Can I paste a Markdown table straight into Google Sheets?
You can, but each line lands in column A as text, with pipes and a --- row. Data → Split text to columns with | as the custom separator splits it, and you still have to delete the delimiter row and the empty edge columns. Converting first avoids that.
How do I import a Markdown table into Google Sheets as a CSV?
Click Download CSV, then in Sheets choose File → Import → Upload and pick the file. Choose where it goes (new spreadsheet, new sheet, replace current sheet, or insert at the selected cell) and leave the separator on Detect automatically or set it to Comma.
Why does my Markdown table show up in one column?
Sheets only splits text into columns when it sees tabs or an HTML table on the clipboard. Raw Markdown has neither. Copy the converted table from this page instead, or use Data → Split text to columns with | as the separator.
Will bold text and links survive the paste?
Normally yes. The clipboard carries an HTML table and Sheets reads bold, italics, strikethrough, links and alignment from it. If you only want the values, press Ctrl+Shift+V when pasting or switch off Keep bold, italic & links.
How do I keep leading zeros when pasting into Google Sheets?
Format the target range as Plain text first (Format → Number → Plain text), then paste. Sheets converts numeric-looking text on paste otherwise, so 007 becomes 7.
Does it work for Google Docs and Slides too?
Copy for Google Sheets targets a spreadsheet range. For a table inside a Google Doc, use the Markdown Table to Word tool, which writes a bordered table with a shaded header.
Can I convert a Google Sheet to a Markdown table instead?
Yes, use the Google Sheets to Markdown tool: select the cells in Sheets, copy them and paste them there.
Is my table sent to a server?
No. The Markdown is parsed in your browser and the clipboard text or CSV file is created locally. Nothing is uploaded.
