How to Copy a Markdown or ChatGPT Table into Word, Excel and Google Docs

Rendered table or Markdown text: which are you copying?

Almost every paste problem comes from mixing up two things that look identical on screen. In a chat app the table you see is rendered: the app turned Markdown into an HTML table. Underneath it is Markdown text like the sample above, with pipes and a row of hyphens. What you get depends on which one reaches the clipboard.

What each kind of copy produces
You copyClipboard holdsWord, Excel, Sheets, Docs, Outlook
The rendered table (drag to select it)HTML table plus plain textA real table, one cell per cell
A copy-table button, where the app has oneDepends on the app and versionCheck the first paste; see below
The message’s Copy buttonMarkdown source textText with pipes, one line per row
A fenced code blockPlain textText with pipes, in a monospace font
Tab-separated text (TSV)Plain text with tab charactersCells in columns in Excel and Sheets

If you want a table, copy the rendered one or use tab-separated text. Pasting Markdown source is the case that needs the splitting steps further down.

How do I copy a table from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?

Chat apps change their interface often, so treat the button names below as a guide, not a promise. The behavior that stays the same is the table above: a rendered table copies as a table, source text copies as text.

  1. Try selecting the table itself. Click just before the first cell, drag to the last cell, and copy with Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on a Mac). This works in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini in a desktop browser, because all three render tables as HTML.
  2. Look for a table toolbar. ChatGPT has shown a copy control on rendered tables, and Gemini has shown an export-to-Sheets option under them. Paste once to see what you got: a table means it copied HTML; text with pipes means it copied Markdown.
  3. Use the message Copy button for the Markdown. That is what you want when the table is going into a README, a wiki or a Markdown editor. It is not what you want for Word or Excel.
  4. Ask for tab-separated output when the target is a spreadsheet. A code block has its own copy button and keeps the tabs.
Ask the chat for spreadsheet-ready textPrompt
Put the table above in a code block as tab-separated values:
one row per line, tabs between cells, no pipes and no
separator row.

The reply is plain text that pastes into Excel or Google Sheets with each value in its own cell. Because the model writes the tabs, spot-check the first few rows: some models substitute spaces for tabs.

Model	Price
Standard	$12
Pro	$29

Mobile apps copy less predictably. Long-pressing a table often selects only text, and the app may offer only the message Copy button. On a phone, the Markdown route plus a converter tool (below) is the dependable one. For a table you will reuse, open the chat in a desktop browser.

How do I paste a Markdown table into Word?

From a rendered table

  1. Copy the rendered table from the chat (or from any Markdown preview).
  2. In Word, click where the table should go and paste with Ctrl+V. It arrives as a Word table.
  3. Use the paste-options icon next to the table: Keep Source Formatting keeps the web styling, Use Destination Styles or Merge Formatting follows your document. Pick the destination style if the text came in dark-mode white or in the wrong font.
  4. Apply a built-in table style from Table Design and use AutoFit in the Layout tab to fit the page width.

From Markdown text

  1. Paste the text as plain text (Keep Text Only) so each Markdown row sits on its own line.
  2. Select all the table lines.
  3. Choose Insert → Table → Convert Text to Table…. Under Separate text at pick Other and type |. Word counts the columns for you.
  4. Delete the row made of hyphens (the Markdown delimiter row), and delete the empty first and last columns that the outer pipes created (Layout → Delete → Delete Columns).
  5. Trim stray spaces with Find and Replace if cells have leading blanks, then apply a table style.

That is four cleanup steps for every table. The Markdown table to Word tool does the conversion for you, and Markdown table to HTML gives you a table you can open in a browser and copy.

How do I paste a Markdown table into Excel?

Rendered table: copy it in the chat and paste into a cell. Each cell lands in its own Excel cell. Bold headers usually carry over; links may too.

Markdown text: every row pastes into column A as one string. Split it:

  1. Paste the text into cell A1. Select the pasted column (Ctrl+Space).
  2. Choose Data → Text to Columns, pick Delimited, then Next.
  3. Tick Other, type |, and untick the other delimiters. Leave Treat consecutive delimiters as one unticked, or empty cells collapse and shift your columns.
  4. On the last step, select columns that hold IDs, ZIP codes or version numbers and set them to Text so Excel doesn't convert them. Finish.
  5. Delete the row of hyphens and the empty first and last columns, then trim the spaces around values with =TRIM() or Find & Replace.

In Microsoft 365 a formula does the split without the wizard and keeps the original text in place. Put the formula in a cell next to each Markdown row and fill down:

Split one Markdown row into cells (Microsoft 365)Excel
=TRIM(TEXTSPLIT(A1, "|"))

TEXTSPLIT is not available in older Excel versions. The empty cells at the start and end remain, so delete those two columns.

Quickest route: convert the table to tab-separated text and paste. A tab-separated paste splits into columns automatically. Use the Markdown table to TSV tool, or Markdown table to Excel to get a spreadsheet file.

How do I paste a Markdown table into Google Sheets?

A rendered table pastes into Sheets as cells. For Markdown text:

  1. Paste into A1. Sheets may show a small clipboard icon after the paste; its menu can offer Split text to columns.
  2. Otherwise select the column and choose Data → Split text to columns. In the separator box choose Custom and type |.
  3. Delete the row of hyphens and any empty columns.

A formula keeps the source text and fills a block next to it. Sheets' SPLIT drops empty pieces by default, which removes the empty cells made by the outer pipes, but it also collapses empty cells in the middle of a row, so check rows that have blank values.

Split a Markdown row into cellsGoogle Sheets
=ARRAYFORMULA(TRIM(SPLIT(A1, "|")))

For a no-cleanup route, the Markdown table to Google Sheets tool converts the table to a form that pastes into Sheets as cells.

How do I get a Markdown table into Google Docs?

Google Docs gives you three workable routes. In order of reliability:

  1. Copy the rendered table from the chat or a Markdown preview and paste into Docs. It becomes a Docs table.
  2. Go through Sheets. Split the text in Sheets (previous section), select the cells, copy, and paste into Docs. Docs asks whether to link to the spreadsheet or paste unlinked; choose unlinked for a plain table.
  3. Try Docs' own Markdown support. Docs has a Markdown option in Tools → Preferences and a paste-from-Markdown command in the Edit menu, and it can import .md files. Whether a pipe table converts to a Docs table depends on your version, so paste a small table first and check.

If the table arrives as text with pipes, fall back to route 2. A Docs table can then be styled from Table properties (border, column width, header row).

Outlook and Notion

Outlook

An email editor accepts a rendered table pasted from a browser, and it comes in as an HTML table. Markdown text stays as text with pipes, because Outlook does not parse Markdown. Convert the Markdown first, either through Word (paste, then copy the finished Word table into the email) or with the HTML tool. If the pasted table looks wrong in dark mode, use the paste option that matches the destination formatting.

Notion

Notion converts pasted Markdown tables and pasted HTML tables to table blocks in most cases, and pasting tab-separated text from a spreadsheet also creates one. Behavior varies by workspace and by how the page was opened, so check the result. Details, including simple tables and databases, are in the Obsidian and Notion tables guide.

Why does my table land in one column?

This is the symptom of pasting Markdown source. The paste has one cell per line, so Word shows a paragraph per row and Excel puts every row in column A. The fix is the same everywhere: split on |. After the split you will see the quirks of the Markdown format:

Excel after Text to Columns on the sample table (columns A to D)
ABCD
(empty)ModelPrice(empty)
(empty):--------------:(empty)
(empty)Standard$12(empty)
(empty)Pro$29(empty)

Delete the empty columns A and D (from the outer pipes) and row 2 (the alignment row), and you have the table. If a cell contained an escaped pipe, \|, the split will cut it in two; restore it by hand or convert with a tool that understands the escape. The escape pipe guide explains why.

Skip the cleanup: convert first

Each of these tools parses the Markdown table properly (alignment row, outer pipes, escaped pipes) so none of the cleanup above is needed:

Before pasting, the Markdown table formatter can tidy a table the model broke, such as a row with the wrong number of cells.

The other direction: Word or Excel to Markdown

Going from Word or Excel back to Markdown is easier, because a clipboard table is already structured data. Copy the cells and paste them into the Word table to Markdown tool, or use Excel to Markdown table, Google Sheets to Markdown and CSV to Markdown table for the same job. For hand-written Markdown, see Markdown table syntax.

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy a table from ChatGPT into Word or Excel?

Select the rendered table with your mouse, copy it, and paste into Word or Excel; the table keeps its rows and columns. If you use the message’s copy button you get Markdown text with pipes, which needs Convert Text to Table in Word or Text to Columns in Excel with | as the delimiter.

Why does my ChatGPT table paste into one column in Excel?

You copied the Markdown text, not the rendered table, so every row is a single string of text with pipes. Use Data → Text to Columns, choose Delimited, tick Other, type |, and finish. Delete the empty first and last columns and the row of hyphens afterwards.

Can I paste a Markdown table into Google Docs?

Yes, but the result depends on what you paste. A rendered table pastes as a Docs table. Raw pipe text may or may not convert, depending on your Docs Markdown settings and version, so the dependable route is Sheets: split the text there, copy the cells, and paste them into Docs.

How do I convert a Markdown table to a Word table?

Either render the Markdown and copy the rendered table into Word, or paste the text, select it, and use Insert → Table → Convert Text to Table with | as the separator. The Markdown table to Word tool skips the cleanup.

What is the fastest way to get a Markdown table into Excel or Sheets?

Convert it to tab-separated values first. A tab-separated table pastes into Excel and Google Sheets with every cell in its own column and no separator row. The Markdown table to TSV tool does that conversion in the browser.

Why do my numbers turn into dates when I paste into Excel?

Excel guesses data types on paste and treats values such as 1-2 or 3/4 as dates. Set the destination columns to Text before pasting, or choose Text for that column in step 3 of the Text to Columns wizard. Leading zeros are lost the same way.

Does the pasted table keep its alignment and bold headers?

A rendered table pasted as HTML usually keeps bold headers and column alignment, though fonts and borders follow the destination app. Markdown text keeps none of that: alignment colons such as :--- are only syntax, so apply alignment in Word, Excel or Sheets after pasting.
