  2. Choose your Confluence

Cloud editor copies a rich table that Confluence Cloud turns into a native table. Wiki markup is for Data Center and Server (Insert → Markup). Storage format is for the REST API.

  3. Copy and paste

Click the copy button, open the page in edit mode, and paste with Ctrl+V (⌘V), or paste the markup into the Markup dialog.

Options explained

Table
Appears when the input holds more than one table. "All tables" outputs every table, one after another; pick one to convert only that table. All tables (default) · any single table
Cloud editor
Copy as rich table puts an HTML table and plain text on the clipboard. The Confluence Cloud editor converts a pasted HTML table into its own table, keeping bold, links and code.
Wiki markup
Confluence wiki markup: ||Header|| for the header row and |cell| for the rest. Use it in Confluence Data Center or Server through Insert → Markup, or in any editor that still has a wiki-markup mode.
Convert bold, code & links
Wiki markup tab only. On: **bold** becomes *bold*, *italic* becomes _italic_, `code` becomes {{code}}, ~~strike~~ becomes -strike- and [text](url) becomes [text|url]. Off: every cell is plain, escaped text.On (default) · Off
Storage format
XHTML table in Confluence storage format, for the REST API (body.storage.value) and storage-format source editors. Cells are wrapped in paragraphs, as Confluence writes them.

About this tool

Confluence does not read Markdown pipe tables, and the two editors want different things. The Cloud editor converts a table pasted as rich text, so Copy as rich table is the quick route. Data Center and Server take Confluence wiki markup (||Header|| and |cell|) through Insert → Markup, with pipes and braces escaped so cells and macros do not break. The REST API takes storage-format XHTML. This page produces all three from one Markdown table, in your browser. For Jira tickets and comments, use the Markdown Table to Jira page instead.

  • Three outputs: Cloud paste, wiki markup and storage format
  • Pipes, braces and brackets escaped so macros do not fire
  • Bold, italic, code, strike, links and images translated
  • <br> line breaks become wiki \\ line breaks inside the cell
  • Several tables from one Markdown document
  • Header row becomes a real Confluence header row
  • Clear paste steps for Cloud and Data Center
  • Runs in your browser; the table is not sent anywhere

Technical details

Confluence table syntax and what is escaped

Confluence has its own table markup rather than Markdown pipes: a header row is written ||Header 1||Header 2|| and each body row |cell|cell|. There is no delimiter row, and a row must stay on one line. The syntax is the same one Jira uses; the Markdown Table to Jira page covers Jira fields and comments.

  • Escaping: | { } [ ] are always backslash-escaped in plain text, because | ends a cell and { starts a macro such as {code} or {info}. Markers such as * _ - + ^ ~ are escaped when they could pair up into formatting.
  • Inline formatting: bold is *text*, italic is _text_, monospace is {{text}}, strikethrough is -text-, superscript is ^text^, subscript is ~text~, links are [text|url] and images are !url!.
  • Line breaks: a cell cannot contain a newline, so <br> and line breaks are written as \\ (two backslashes).
  • Alignment: wiki markup has no column alignment, so :---: and ---: from the Markdown delimiter row are not carried over. The Cloud editor tab writes alignment into the pasted HTML, and the storage format carries it as text-align on the paragraph.
  • Storage format: Confluence stores a page as XHTML. The table is written as table, tbody, tr, th and td elements with each cell wrapped in a paragraph, and images as ac:image elements.

Common problems and fixes

The wiki markup shows up as text in Confluence Cloud

Cause: The current Cloud editor does not convert wiki markup typed or pasted into the page body.

Fix: Use the Cloud editor tab (Copy as rich table) and paste into the page. If your site offers Insert → Markup, the wiki markup can also go there.

The table pasted as plain text in Cloud

Cause: The browser only allowed plain text on the clipboard, or you pasted into a field that takes text only, such as a macro body.

Fix: Paste into the normal page body. If the copy button reports an error, select the preview table and copy it with Ctrl+C.

A macro or an error appears inside a cell

Cause: An unescaped { starts a Confluence macro such as {code} or {panel}.

Fix: Use this converter: it writes \{ and \} so the braces stay literal.

Cells shifted or a row broke apart

Cause: A | inside a cell was read as a cell separator, or the cell contained a real line break.

Fix: Convert with this tool, which writes \| and turns line breaks into \\.

The Markup dialog is missing

Cause: The Markup option is in the Data Center and Server editor. Some Cloud sites do not show it.

Fix: In Cloud, use the Cloud editor tab and paste the rich table.

Platform compatibility

PlatformSupportNotes
Confluence Cloud (current editor) SupportedCopy as rich table, then paste into the page body. The editor converts the HTML table to a native table. Wiki markup typed into the body is not converted.
Confluence Data Center and Server SupportedOpen Insert more content (+) → Markup, choose Confluence Wiki, paste the wiki markup and click Insert. Pasting a rich table into the editor usually works as well.
Editors with a wiki-markup mode SupportedOlder Confluence editors and wiki-renderer fields accept the wiki markup directly.
Confluence REST API SupportedUse the Storage format tab and send the XHTML as body.storage.value with representation storage.
Jira SupportedJira Server, Data Center and legacy wiki-renderer fields use the same || and | table syntax. See the Markdown Table to Jira page for Jira-specific notes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a Markdown table to a Confluence table?

Paste the Markdown into the box on this page. For Confluence Cloud click Copy as rich table and paste into the page; for Data Center or Server copy the wiki markup and insert it through Insert → Markup with Confluence Wiki selected.

How do I paste a table into Confluence Cloud?

Use the Cloud editor tab, click Copy as rich table, open the page in edit mode, click where the table goes and press Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac). The editor converts the HTML into a native table you can resize and edit.

What is the Confluence wiki markup for a table?

A header row is written ||Header 1||Header 2|| and each body row |Cell 1|Cell 2|. There is no delimiter row, and every row stays on one line. Line breaks inside a cell are written \\.

How do I insert wiki markup in Confluence?

In Confluence Data Center and Server, choose Insert more content (+) → Markup, pick Confluence Wiki, paste the markup, check the preview and click Insert. As of October 2026 the current Cloud editor does not convert wiki markup in the page body, so use the Cloud editor tab there.

Does Confluence support Markdown tables?

Confluence tables are written in wiki markup or edited in the editor, not with Markdown pipes. A Markdown pipe table pasted into the Cloud editor may stay as plain text, so converting it first is the reliable route.

How do I put | or { inside a Confluence table cell?

Escape them with a backslash: \| and \{. An unescaped | ends the cell and an unescaped { starts a macro. This converter escapes them for you.

How are line breaks inside a cell handled?

Wiki markup uses two backslashes (\\) for a line break inside a cell, and the converter turns <br> into it. In the Cloud editor tab the break stays a real line break in the pasted table.

Is this the same as the Markdown to Jira converter?

The table syntax is the same, but this page is built for Confluence: a Cloud paste, a Data Center Markup insert and storage format. Use the Markdown Table to Jira page for ticket descriptions and comments.

What is the storage format output for?

It is the XHTML Confluence stores a page as. You need it for the REST API (body.storage.value) or when editing a page in a storage-format source editor.

Is my table uploaded anywhere?

No. The Markdown is parsed and converted in your browser, and the clipboard text is created locally.
