How to convert a Markdown table to Excel in 3 steps

  1. Paste your Markdown

Paste one table or a whole README. Every GitHub-style table in the text is found; CSV and TSV work too. Nothing leaves your browser.

  2. Check the preview

The preview shows exactly what goes into the workbook. With several tables, pick one or keep "All tables" to get one sheet per table.

  3. Download or copy

Click Download .xlsx for a finished workbook, or Copy for Excel and press Ctrl+V (⌘V) in the cell where the table should start.

Example

Markdown table
| Region | Units | Revenue | Growth | Last order |
| :--- | ---: | ---: | ---: | :---: |
| North America | 1,240 | $48,360.00 | 12.5% | 2026-09-28 |
| Asia Pacific | 1,515 | $52,995.50 | 21.4% | 2026-09-29 |
| **Total** | **2,755** | | | |
Worksheet (row 1 bold and frozen)
  | A | B | C | D | E
1 | Region | Units | Revenue | Growth | Last order
2 | North America | 1,240 | $48,360.00 | 12.5% | 2026-09-28
3 | Asia Pacific | 1,515 | $52,995.50 | 21.4% | 2026-09-29
4 | Total | 2,755 | | |

B2 = 1240 (number, #,##0)    C2 = 48360 ("$"#,##0.00)
D2 = 0.125 (0.0%)            E2 = date serial 46293 (yyyy-mm-dd)

Options explained

Table
Appears when the input holds more than one table. "All tables" writes one worksheet per table, named after the nearest heading above it (Excel caps sheet names at 31 characters and forbids [ ] : * ? / \, so those are cleaned up).All tables (default) · any single table
Numbers, %, currency & dates as values
Stores 1,240 as the number 1240 with a thousands format, 12.5% as 0.125 formatted as a percentage, $48,360.00 as 48360 with a currency format and 2026-10-09 as a real date, so SUM, sorting and charts work. Values that only look numeric stay text: leading zeros (007), more than 15 digits (IDs, card numbers), phone numbers, version strings like 1.2.3.On (default) · Off: every cell is text
Keep bold, italic & links
**bold**, *italic*, ~~strikethrough~~ and `code` become cell formatting. A cell that contains only a link becomes a clickable hyperlink; links inside longer text keep their text. Turn it off for plain values. On (default) · Off
Freeze & filter the header row
Freezes row 1 so it stays visible while scrolling, shades it, makes it bold and switches on AutoFilter. The header is always bold in the .xlsx; this option controls the freeze and the filter buttons. On (default) · Off
Copy for Excel / Copy as TSV
Copy for Excel puts an HTML table on the clipboard, which Excel pastes as separate cells with the header formatting and links. Copy as TSV puts plain tab-separated text, which every spreadsheet understands but which Excel re-types on paste (so 007 becomes 7).

About this tool

Paste a Markdown table, or a README that contains several, and download a finished .xlsx workbook. The converter reads GitHub Flavored Markdown tables, stores numbers, percentages, currency and ISO dates as real values, writes a bold shaded header row with a frozen pane and filter buttons, and gives every table its own worksheet. The file is built in your browser, so your data is never uploaded.

  • Real .xlsx built in your browser, no upload and no sign-up
  • One worksheet per Markdown table, named after its heading
  • Numbers, percentages, currency and ISO dates stored as values
  • Bold, shaded, frozen header row with AutoFilter
  • Line breaks (<br>) kept inside the cell with Wrap Text on
  • Bold, italic, strikethrough and links carried over
  • Column alignment from :---: and ---: applied to the cells
  • Copy-and-paste route for when Excel is already open

Technical details

How the converter reads Markdown and writes the workbook

Tables are found with the GitHub Flavored Markdown rules: a header row, a delimiter row with the same number of cells, then body rows until a blank line. Escaped pipes (\|) become literal pipes. The workbook is written as standard Office Open XML (SpreadsheetML) and zipped in the browser, so the file opens in Excel for Windows and Mac, Excel for the web, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc and Apple Numbers.

  • Strict table detection: a header row with a different cell count from its delimiter row is not a table on GitHub either; the status bar tells you which line is wrong, and the converter still exports it when it is the only table.
  • Conservative typing: a value only becomes a number when converting it cannot lose information. Leading zeros, long IDs, and mixed text stay as text.
  • Dates: only unambiguous ISO dates (YYYY-MM-DD) are converted. 03/04/2026 stays text because it means 3 April in most countries and March 4 in the US.
  • Formatting: inline Markdown is turned into rich-text runs inside the cell, so a cell that reads "**Total** (est.)" keeps "Total" bold.
  • Safety: cells are always written as values, never as formulas, so a cell starting with = or + cannot run anything when the file is opened.

Common problems and fixes

A column shows ##### in Excel

Cause: The column is narrower than a number or date in it. Column widths are estimated from the text, and fonts differ.

Fix: Double-click the right edge of the column header to auto-fit it.

Leading zeros disappeared (007 became 7)

Cause: You used Copy as TSV and pasted into Excel, which converts anything that looks like a number on paste.

Fix: Use Download .xlsx: values with leading zeros are stored as text and keep their zeros.

The whole Markdown table landed in column A

Cause: Raw Markdown was pasted into Excel instead of the converted cells.

Fix: Paste the Markdown into the box above and use Copy for Excel or Download .xlsx.

Only part of the table was converted

Cause: A blank line or a line starting with #, >, - or a code fence ends a Markdown table. Rows after it are not part of the table.

Fix: Remove the blank line inside the table, or check the preview to see where the table stops.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a Markdown table to Excel?

Paste the Markdown into the box on this page and click Download .xlsx. You get a workbook with the header in row 1 and every body row below it. If Excel is already open, click Copy for Excel instead, select the first cell and press Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac).

Will numbers be stored as numbers in Excel?

Yes, with "Numbers, %, currency & dates as values" on (the default). 1,240 becomes 1240 with a thousands format, 12.5% becomes 0.125 shown as a percentage, $48,360.00 becomes 48360 with a dollar format and 2026-10-09 becomes a date. Values such as 007, long IDs and phone numbers stay text so nothing is lost.

Can I convert several Markdown tables to Excel at once?

Yes. Paste the whole document; each table becomes its own worksheet, named after the heading above it (or Table 1, Table 2… when there is none). Pick a single table from the Table menu if you only want one.

Can I paste a Markdown table straight into Excel?

Not usefully: Excel puts each line in column A. You can split it with Data → Text to Columns → Delimited → Other: |, but you are left with empty first and last columns, the --- row and padding spaces. Converting first gives clean cells.

Does it keep bold text and links?

Yes. Bold, italic, strikethrough and inline code become cell formatting, and a cell that contains only a link becomes a clickable hyperlink. A link inside longer text keeps its visible text only, because an Excel cell holds one hyperlink.

What happens to <br> line breaks in cells?

They become real line breaks inside the same cell, and Wrap Text is switched on for that cell so both lines are visible.

Is my table uploaded anywhere?

No. The Markdown is parsed and the .xlsx file is built in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.

Will the file open in Google Sheets, LibreOffice or Numbers?

Yes. It is a standard .xlsx file. In Google Sheets use File → Import → Upload (or open it from Drive); LibreOffice Calc and Apple Numbers open it directly. For Google Sheets you can also use the Markdown table to Google Sheets tool, which copies cells for pasting.
