How to view a Markdown table in 3 steps

  1. Paste your Markdown

Paste one table or a whole document. Each GitHub Flavored Markdown table is found and drawn in place, between the headings and paragraphs around it.

  2. Read it comfortably

Zoom between 50% and 200%, open full screen, switch between GitHub light and dark, or show the tables only. The header row stays visible while you scroll.

  3. Copy or export

Copy a table as a rich table for Word, Docs or Slides, download it as a PNG, or open it in the table editor to change it.

About this tool

Paste a Markdown table, or a whole document, and read the tables as they will look on GitHub: borders, a bold header, striped rows and column alignment. Zoom from 50% to 200%, open the view full screen, keep the header visible while you scroll, and switch between GitHub light and dark. Copy a table as a real table for Word or Slides, or save it as a PNG. Pasted Markdown is never inserted as raw HTML, so untrusted text is safe, and nothing leaves your browser.

  • Every GFM table in a document, drawn GitHub-style
  • Headings, paragraphs, lists, quotes and code blocks around them
  • Zoom from 50% to 200% and a full-screen view
  • Sticky header row while scrolling long tables
  • Light and dark palettes, independent of the site theme
  • Column alignment, bold, italic, code, links and <br> in cells
  • Copy as a rich table or download a PNG
  • Untrusted Markdown is safe: raw HTML is never inserted

Technical details

What is rendered, and how it stays safe

The viewer is a table viewer, not a full Markdown engine. It finds tables with the GitHub Flavored Markdown rules and draws the blocks around them (headings, paragraphs, lists, block quotes, fenced code and rules) in a GitHub-like style. Cell content is rendered by a small renderer that builds elements directly; it never writes input back into the page as HTML.

  • Table detection: a header row, a delimiter row with the same number of cells, then body rows until a blank line or another block. A header and delimiter with different cell counts are not a table on GitHub either, and the status line says so.
  • Cell formatting: code spans, backslash escapes, bold, italic, strikethrough, http(s) links and images, line breaks, and a short list of simple tags (b, strong, i, em, del, s, sub, sup, kbd, small, mark, code, ul, ol, li, and img with src, alt and width) are rendered. Anything else is shown as literal text.
  • Safety: no raw HTML is ever injected. Scripts, event-handler attributes, style attributes and javascript: links appear as plain text or are dropped, and links are limited to http, https, mailto and relative addresses.
  • Not rendered: nested lists, task-list checkboxes inside cells, math, footnotes and HTML blocks outside tables. GitHub itself does not render block-level Markdown inside a table cell either.
  • Dark mode: the viewer carries its own palettes (light and dark) so you can check a table in both, regardless of the site theme.

Common problems and fixes

My table shows as plain text

Cause: The header row and the delimiter row (| --- | --- |) have a different number of cells, the delimiter row is missing, or the table is indented four or more spaces, which makes it a code block.

Fix: Check the status line for the line number and fix the cell count. The Markdown Table Validator lists every problem.

The table ends early

Cause: A blank line, or a line starting with #, >, - or a code fence, ends a table.

Fix: Remove the blank line inside the table, and escape a leading - or > in a cell.

A cell is split in two

Cause: An unescaped | inside a cell, including inside backticks, starts a new cell.

Fix: Write \| inside the cell.

A very wide table is hard to read

Cause: The table is wider than the viewer.

Fix: Zoom out, use full screen, or scroll sideways; the first column and header stay readable with the sticky header.

Frequently asked questions

How can I preview a Markdown table online?

Paste the Markdown into the box on this page. Every table is rendered GitHub-style next to it, with alignment, bold, italic, code, links and line breaks in the cells. Nothing is uploaded.

How do I view the tables in a README without opening GitHub?

Paste the whole README. The tables are drawn between the headings and paragraphs around them, or switch Show to Tables only to see just the tables with a label above each one.

Why is my Markdown table not rendering?

The usual causes are a header row and delimiter row with different numbers of cells, a missing delimiter row, a blank line inside the table, or four spaces of indentation. The status line under the input names the line and the problem.

Is this exactly how GitHub renders the table?

It follows the same GitHub Flavored Markdown table rules and a similar look, but it is not GitHub. Platform differences (for example in HTML sanitizing) can exist, so check the final README on the platform you publish to.

Is it safe to paste Markdown from someone else?

Yes. The viewer never inserts raw HTML. Script tags, event-handler attributes and javascript: links are shown as text or dropped, and links are limited to http, https, mailto and relative addresses.

Can I switch to dark mode?

Yes. Theme lets you pick GitHub light or GitHub dark independently of the site theme, which helps when a table has to look right in both modes.

Can I zoom or see a wide table full screen?

Yes. Zoom runs from 50% to 200%, Full screen fills the window (Esc closes it), and the header row stays visible while you scroll a long table.

Can I copy the rendered table into Word, Google Docs or Slides?

Yes. Click Copy as rich table and paste. Word, Docs, Outlook and Slides create a real table with borders and a bold header row. For a picture instead, use Download PNG.

Does it render more than tables?

It draws headings, paragraphs, bullet and numbered lists, block quotes, fenced code blocks and rules around the tables, so a README reads in order. It is not a complete Markdown renderer; nested lists, math and HTML blocks are not drawn.
